The two great LEGO Harry Potter display builds are no longer an even choice. The Hogwarts Express Collectors Edition (76405) retired at the end of 2024, while the Hogwarts Castle (71043) is still sold new. Here is how they compare and what to buy instead of the train.
This used to be an even choice between LEGO's two great Harry Potter display builds. It is not any more: the Hogwarts Express Collectors Edition retired at the end of 2024, while the Hogwarts Castle is still sold new, with an expected exit at the end of 2027 in our catalog. If you want a flagship Harry Potter display set at list price, buy the castle; if your heart is set on the train, you are buying second-hand or choosing a smaller train build.

Hogwarts Castle (71043): still on sale
The whole school at microfigure scale: towers, turrets, chambers, classrooms, the Whomping Willow and Hagrid's hut, with 27 microfigures, 5 Dementors and the four Hogwarts founders as minifigures.
The castle is the set to buy if you want all of Hogwarts in one model. LEGO packs it with locations from across the films, from classrooms and chambers to the Whomping Willow and Hagrid's hut, and its microfigures stand in for students, professors and statues. It is a display piece first: the scale is far too small for minifigures to move through, and the four minifigures it does include, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Salazar Slytherin and Rowena Ravenclaw, stand on their own display stand. Plan for its footprint, about 58 cm tall and 69 cm wide, on a table or a deep shelf.
Hogwarts Express Collectors Edition (76405): retired
An approximately 1:32 scale replica of the train, with a lever that makes the engine rock like a steam train, a tender, a three-compartment passenger car and Platform 9 3/4.
The train was LEGO's other great Harry Potter display build. The engine has a detailed underside and a lever on top that makes the model rock with the motion of a steam engine, and the passenger car's three compartments each hold a scene from the films: Harry, Ron and Hermione meeting, Lupin driving off the Dementor, and Luna rescuing Harry from Draco. The platform shows the adult Harry and Ginny seeing their children off. At about 118 cm it needs a long mantel or shelf rather than a deep one.
Because it retired at the end of 2024, a new copy now comes only from other stores' remaining stock or from the secondary market. Check the set page and compare any price with the original list price on the card before you buy.
Other ways to own the train
A section of the Hogwarts Express and Platform 9 3/4 built to stand between books, with Harry, Ron, Hedwig and Scabbers, and mirrors that make the train look longer. Expected to leave on December 31, 2026.
The smaller Hogwarts Express and Hogsmeade Station play set (76423), with a train that runs on track and a station, has also retired, at the end of 2025.

A smaller microscale castle with the Main Tower, Astronomy Tower, Great Hall, Boathouse, the Black Lake and rooms such as the Chamber of Secrets and the Potions Classroom. Expected to leave on December 31, 2026.
