Measure the set first

Most display problems are size problems. A few useful reference points from our catalog: LEGO modular buildings are about 25 cm (10 inches) deep, so they fit a standard bookcase. The Ultimate Collector Series Millennium Falcon is about 84 by 56 cm, too big for any of the cabinets below. Check a set's page for its dimensions before choosing furniture, and allow a little extra depth so the set is not touching the glass or hanging over the edge.

Glass cabinets: protection from dust

BLÅLIDEN: the DETOLF's narrow successor

IKEA no longer sells the DETOLF, the glass cabinet that many LEGO fans used for years. The closest current model is the BLÅLIDEN glass-door cabinet. IKEA lists it at 13 3/4 inches wide, 12 5/8 inches deep and 59 1/2 inches tall, with three movable glass shelves rated for a maximum of 7 lb each.

  • Good for: minifigures, small starships, Speed Champions cars, small Botanicals and BrickHeadz.
  • Not for: large or heavy sets. 7 lb a shelf rules out most big display models.
  • Note: IKEA's own reviews point out that extra or replacement shelves are not sold separately.

FABRIKÖR: for heavier sets

The FABRIKÖR glass-door cabinet is a steel cabinet with tempered glass, 22 1/2 inches wide, 18 1/2 inches deep and 59 inches tall. It has two adjustable shelves rated for 22 lb each, and it locks.

  • Good for: mid-size and heavier display sets, a modular building per shelf, and anything you want behind a lock.
  • Not for: the very largest sets, which are wider or deeper than the cabinet.

BILLY with glass doors

A BILLY bookcase with OXBERG or HÖGBO glass doors turns an ordinary bookcase into a display case with more shelf space than either cabinet above. The glass covers the front only, so it keeps out less dust than a cabinet with glass sides, and the shelves are wood rather than glass.

BILLY is 11 inches deep, which takes modular buildings and most display sets, and its shelves adjust so tall models can share a unit with low ones.

LACK wall shelf

LACK wall shelves are 10 1/4 inches deep and come in 11 3/4, 43 1/4 and 74 3/4 inch lengths, with hidden fixings. The longer ones suit a row of modular buildings. IKEA rates the load according to the wall type and the fixings used, so check the listing for your wall before loading heavy sets.

BERGSHULT shelves come 7 7/8 or 11 3/4 inches deep, in 31 1/2 and 47 1/4 inch lengths, on brackets you place where you want them. The deeper version suits larger sets; the shallow one suits minifigures and small builds.

MOSSLANDA picture ledge

MOSSLANDA picture ledges come in 21 3/4 and 45 1/4 inch lengths. They are shallow, with a front lip that stops minifigures and small sets from sliding off, which makes them the simplest way to put a minifigure collection on a wall.

Lighting a display

  • Use LEDs. LED strips and spots give off little heat, which matters because LEGO warns that bricks that get very hot can change shape.
  • Choose CRI 90 or higher. The color rendering index measures how faithfully a light shows colors; low-CRI strips make colors look dull.
  • IKEA's smart strip: ORMANÄS is IKEA's current color and white LED strip, controlled from an app.

Anchoring and earthquakes

  • Anchor every cabinet. IKEA's listings for both the BLÅLIDEN and the FABRIKÖR say the cabinet must be securely anchored to the wall, with screws and plugs suited to your wall.

Dust, sun and cleaning

  • Keep sets out of direct sun. Long exposure can fade or yellow bricks, white and pale pieces first, and LEGO advises against drying bricks in sunlight because heat can change their shape.
  • Dust open shelves with a soft brush or a microfiber cloth.
  • Washing: if a set needs a proper clean, LEGO's advice is to take it apart and wash the pieces by hand in water no hotter than 40°C (104°F), never in a dishwasher or washing machine, and to air dry them out of direct sunlight.
