📝 Our Take

AI-assisted editorial summary, grounded in our LEGO database and public community discussions. How we use AI

Big Bad Island Expansion Set brings towering enemies and classic platforming action right to your LEGO Super Mario layout. This retired 2022 set stands out by focusing heavily on oversized character builds, featuring brick-built display stands that seamlessly integrate with interactive figures like LEGO Mario, Luigi, or Peach.

This set is perfect for dedicated Super Mario fans and younger builders expanding their interactive digital courses. With 354 pieces, the build offers a fun, straightforward afternoon project that rewards you with iconic boss-level characters like Iggy and a massive Big Goomba.

Skip this if you are looking for a traditional LEGO display model or advanced building techniques. Because this is an expansion set designed primarily for the Super Mario game system, it lacks the standalone aesthetic appeal of traditional sets and requires a starter course to get the full interactive experience.

⏳ Retired

As a retired set from the popular LEGO Super Mario theme, the Big Bad Island Expansion Set holds solid, niche appeal for theme completionists and figure collectors. Because it introduced new-for-2022 character figures like Iggy and the Big Koopa Troopa alongside brick-built stands, secondary market demand remains steady among kids and families who missed out during its initial retail run. With 354 pieces at a modest original MSRP of $44.99, its piece-to-price ratio was reasonable, though its long-term appreciation is somewhat capped by being part of a specialized, electronic-dependent theme. However, because Super Mario character packs and expansions eventually become harder to find complete with their specific interactive action tiles, sealed copies should continue to slowly appreciate in value for dedicated theme collectors.

Compared to other Super Mario expansion sets in the $40-$50 range, 71412 stands out by prioritizing large, brick-built character figures over complex environmental structures. While sets like Bowser's Airship or larger castle expansions offer more sprawling architecture, Big Bad Island is uniquely tailored for fans who want iconic boss characters to populate their custom layouts.
