What's New in LEGO Technic for 2026

The 2026 range arrived in four waves: January, March, June and August. Between them they cover a $9.99 harvester, three Formula 1 cars, a rocket that separates its stages, the first pneumatic Unimog in years and the new 1:8 flagship. Here is what each wave added, with our catalog price for every set that has one.

1. The 1:8 Flagship: Koenigsegg Sadair's Spear (42232)

LEGO's 1:8 Ultimate Car line has moved in two-year steps since the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS: Bugatti Chiron in 2018, Lamborghini Sián in 2020, Ferrari Daytona SP3 in 2022, McLaren P1 in 2024, and from July 1, 2026, a Koenigsegg. At 4,104 pieces it is the biggest of them. The headline is the gearbox: nine forward speeds worked through paddle shifters, a Drive, Neutral and Reverse selector between the seats, and a rotating gear indicator. Around it sit Koenigsegg's Triplex suspension, built with new shock absorber and wishbone elements, a twin-turbocharged V8 with moving pistons, working steering, and a "Ghost Mode" in which lifting the rear clam moves the doors, hood and mirrors together in one motion.

2. January: Race Cars, a Rocket and the $9.99 Harvester

The January 1 wave set the tone. The Porsche 911 GT3 R REXY AO Racing Car (42224, $149.99) is a 1,313-piece race car in the green "Rexy" dinosaur livery with suspension on all four wheels, a differential, a boxer engine and synchronised air jacks. The Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport (42222, $64.99) brings a W16 engine, knob steering and opening doors at a price the 2018 Chiron never dreamed of. The NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket (42221, $59.99), developed with NASA and ESA, separates its stages as you turn a crank. For adults, the 1966 Ford GT40 MKII (42223, $74.99) is an 18+ model with a V8 and working steering. At the other end, the John Deere 1470H Wheeled Harvester (42218) and Yellow Motorcycle (42225) are $9.99 each, and the two Monster Jam trucks (42219 and 42220) are $34.99 pull-backs.

3. March: The F1 Car, the BMW and the Jeep

March 1 brought the McLaren MCL39 F1 Car (42228, $229.99), 1,675 pieces with front steering, suspension, a gearbox, a differential and a rear wing that replicates the DRS angle change of the real car. The BMW M4 GT3 EVO (42226, $64.99) has working steering, opening doors and a piston engine in 747 pieces, and the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (42227, $64.99) is a bigger successor to the 2022 Jeep with suspension and the boxy body the original lacked room for.

4. Summer: Pneumatics, Movie Cars and a Remote-Control Tumbler

June 1 was the working-machine wave: the Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 5023 with Crane (42242, $129.99) has a two-stage pneumatic knuckle-boom crane, four-wheel drive, all-wheel suspension, a six-cylinder engine, outriggers and a tipping bed in 1,189 pieces. Alongside it came two Fast & Furious cars, the 18+ Dodge Charger R/T (42231, $159.99) and the 14+ Mitsubishi Eclipse (42229, $64.99), plus a green Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport (42241, $64.99). This is the tier for a first Technic set, whether the builder is eight or forty. The point is not piece count, it is seeing one mechanism work: a crank, a piston, a pull-back motor. Buy the cheapest set that has the function the builder will care about.

Remote Control and Motorised Technic in 2026

Most Technic is hand-powered, and 2026 is no exception: of the year's releases, the only one we have seen announced with a motor and an app inside is the Batmobile Tumbler (42239). It is 719 pieces, rated 12+, released August 1, and driven through the CONTROL+ app, which handles steering, the lights and a "jet engine" speed boost, with a rechargeable battery charged over USB-C rather than a box of AAs. More pieces means harder, not better: a 4,104-piece Koenigsegg is a worse first set than a 117-piece harvester because the first mistake in a gearbox is found forty steps later. Functions: what the words on the box mean

  • Steering: either a roof knob (HOG, "hand of god"), as on the Bugatti Pur Sport, or a working steering wheel, as on the 1:8 cars. Both turn the front wheels; only the wheel is realistic.
  • Suspension: springs on the axles. The Porsche REXY, Unimog, Ducati Desmo450 and Dodge Charger have it; the $64.99 Bugatti does not.
  • Differential: lets the driven wheels turn at different speeds through a corner. It is the tell of a serious car: REXY, Charger, MCL39, Koenigsegg.
  • Gearbox: selectable ratios, from the MCL39's to the Koenigsegg's nine speeds. The most satisfying thing to build and the first thing to go wrong if a step is missed.
  • Pneumatics: air cylinders worked by a hand pump. Only the Unimog has them in 2026.
  • Pull-back and CONTROL+: a pull-back motor (Monster Jam) needs nothing; CONTROL+ (Tumbler, EC500) needs a phone, the free app and charging.
