📝 Our Take

AI-assisted editorial summary, grounded in our LEGO database and public community discussions. How we use AI

The Liebherr R 9800 Excavator is a monumental Technic set. With over 4,000 pieces and powered by seven advanced motors controlled via the LEGO Technic CONTROL+ App, this model delivers an immersive and challenging building experience that replicates the power and sophistication of the real-world machine.

This set is perfect for experienced Technic builders and machinery enthusiasts. The intricate building process, combined with the advanced app-controlled functionality, provides hours of engaging entertainment and a rewarding sense of accomplishment upon completion.

Skip this if you're new to Technic or prefer simpler builds. The complexity and size of the Liebherr R 9800 might be overwhelming; consider smaller, more accessible Technic sets like the LEGO Technic Monster Jam Monster Mutt Dalmatian (42150) or the LEGO Technic McLaren Formula 1 Race Car (42141) for a less daunting introduction.

Investment Grade

⏳ Retired

The Liebherr R 9800 Excavator is a retired Technic set with a high piece count and complex motorized functions, making it a potentially strong investment. Its popularity among Technic enthusiasts and the increasing demand for retired flagship models contribute to its rising value. However, the high original MSRP means that appreciation may be slower compared to smaller, more accessible sets. The set's large size and specialized nature might limit its appeal to a niche market, but its collectibility as a complex, app-controlled Technic model makes it a worthwhile consideration for investors.

The Liebherr R 9800 Excavator competes with other large-scale Technic sets like the LEGO Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator (42055) and the LEGO Technic Crawler Crane (42042). While the Bucket Wheel Excavator offers a similar building experience with motorized functions, the Liebherr R 9800 stands out due to its advanced app-controlled features. Collectors may choose the Liebherr R 9800 for its modern technology and realistic design, despite the higher price point.
