Technic Gear Assistance

Howdy All, Trying to create a automatic gear shifter mechanism for a lateral movement piece for a larger MOC I am new to using the grey, red, and orange gears shown and help some help trying to figure out how to configure/connect them. In short, the orange gear with its teeth when turned is supposed to shift the great middle gear either left or right (or up and down) into the red gears and temporarily lock onto them to position itself to drive a plate left to right.
