Is it too late for Mindstorms?

I’m hoping to get some advice from the community here. I have a 9yo who is interested in robotics and coding, and I want to try and encourage him if I can (both his parents are engineers!). When I was his age I had the original Lego Mindstorms robotics invention system and droid developer kit so this immediately sprang to mind. I’ve dug them both out the attic but am not sure how compatible they are with Windows 10 or whether the ancillary bits still work. I was looking at the newer kits but...
