Ferrari Daytona gearbox, is this normal?

I'm currently building the gearbox of the Ferrari Daytona set, and I have been regularly checking the gears to make sure everything is smooth. However, after I connected the rear wheels at step 170, I noticed that the gearbox is so tight that I can't even rotate the tires when the two orange pieces are in the default position. When I rotate the yellow piece (the one that shifts gears), the wheels start to rotate fine. Is this how it's supposed to work, or did I do something wrong? I just want...
