I got curious as to how easy it would be to implement VLL (used by the Scout, Micro Scout, Spybotics, etc.) using modern hardware. Turns out it can be done in about 5 minutes with some off-the-shelf hardware. No IR LED, no special drivers; just visible light and timing.
