📝 Our Take

AI-assisted editorial summary, grounded in our LEGO database and public community discussions. How we use AI

Desert Lightning is a thrilling blast from the 2017 Ninjago Hands of Time era. Featuring an aggressive, jagged design and a striking red-and-black color palette, this vehicle perfectly captures the chaotic energy of the Time Twins' faction.

This set is perfect for Ninjago completionists and vehicle enthusiasts. At 201 pieces, it offers a quick, engaging build that results in a surprisingly sleek dune buggy with neat play features, making it a great grab-and-go display or play piece.

Skip this if you are hunting for massive architectural builds or high piece counts. If you want a more substantial Ninjago vehicle experience, look toward larger mech or dragon sets from the theme instead.

⏳ Retired

As a retired 2017 Ninjago set, Desert Lightning has steadily climbed in value, currently commanding a healthy secondary market price compared to its original $19.99 MSRP. The Hands of Time sub-theme has a dedicated fanbase, and complete sets with all three minifigures are increasingly sought after by collectors trying to finish their chronological Ninjago rosters. While its 201-piece count is modest, the inclusion of specific villains and Jay makes it a desirable package for minifigure completionists. Investors should note that while it won't yield Millennium Falcon-tier returns, its niche appeal within a powerhouse theme like Ninjago ensures steady, reliable appreciation.

⚖ Compare Similar Sets

The Vermillion Attack

Compared to other small-to-mid-sized Ninjago vehicles from the same era, Desert Lightning stands out for its aggressive styling and distinctive wing elements. While standard car sets can sometimes feel repetitive, the unique blend of Technic framing and System bodywork gives it an edge over basic city vehicles.

3 Minifigures Included

Includes three solid figures: Jay in his Hands of Time outfit, alongside the villainous Commander Blunck and Tannin, making it a great set for instant hero-versus-villain play scenarios.
