What sets from 1990-2006 are on the same or similar level of detail/playability as 7744?

Been looking for some sets for a while and I cannot really find any older sets that are on a similar level. Really cool sets like Ice Station Odyssey or Neptune Discovery Lab look amazing on paper, but upon watching a review, they're kind of empty or lacking.
