Recreating Someone’s MOC w/o Instructions

I usually build sets only. I enjoy the instructions vs trying to free-build. Someone shared this star last year somewhere on Reddit, and they said they wouldn’t be offering up any more info than what is in the two pics they shared. Im trying my darnedest to recreate it, but Im stuck at how they created the base/holder. (I also am using the 1x1 snot brick in place of that one piece Im unsure if what it is.)
