“Outside the box” starter set?

I have an 8 year old who has a fair (prob not a whole lot) if used technic pieces. He’s a smarty pants kid and loves making his own “mechanisms”. So not super interested in following directions. Probably could use more technic pieces, not sure… and we don’t have any motors. My brother wants to get him a late Christmas gift. Under $50 probably.
