How to start from scratch?

Hey guys, I am in my thirties. Played a lot with Lego grewing up, but my parents passed all my stuff onto others when I became an adult. I would like to get back into Lego. Mostly building my own stuff (which I understand is called MOC). How do you recommend to start from scratch? Build actual lego sets and take the pieces from here to build other staff?
