Has the building block hobby changed a lot in the last few years?

I’ve been into building block sets for a long time, mostly the standard LEGO sets, but lately I’ve been noticing how much the whole hobby seems to be evolving. There are way more custom MOCs, alternate builds, and themed display-style sets now (anime, movies, sci-fi, etc.). Some of them look extremely detailed compared to older sets, almost like they’re designed more for display than actual play.
