Got a 8880 Supercar set for Christmas...and the rarest piece in the set cracked!

Got my white whale set for Christmas, the 8880 Supercar (unopened) from the mid 1990s, but putting it together, when I snapped the shifter into the housing...it cracked! 30 year old plastic.....but I'm shattered now.
