Does a character fix with a LEGO figure type?

I remember decades ago I post this question in Eurobricks. It's probably throwback time on reddit. Hopefully it's the right place to post. As we know, mainstream LEGO lineup this day has three main figure types-- Duplo, Minifigure and Minidoll, each type mostly focus on exclusive themes and figures, which means in most times a theme or a character mostly doesn't repetitively appear in more than one category.
