Anyone use O Gauge figurines or classic model railway terrain techniques on their Lego layout?

I was wondering if anyone uses O Gauge figurines or other accessories instead of minfigs on their layout? The scale seems to be very similar. Do some of you also combine Lego trains and man made structures with classic modelling techniques for example static grass, gypsum hills, scale wire trees etc.? So, basically an O gauge layout, but using Lego trains and buildings instead of available O gauge models? I think the combination could be quite striking and has the advantage of being cheaper...
