Am I crazy or did early 70's minifigs have a different hair mold than the iconic classic hair piece?

I've never seen it documented in Bricklink, but the sides of the hair look thicker to me and are missing the sideburns from the mold most people are familiar with. Almost closer to the pigtails from that era. I've seen this on the box art for a few sets from the early 70s. Did we ever get a mold that looked like this or was this just a prototype for promotional pieces that never went into production?
