Goombrat brings a fun, distinct variation to the LEGO Super Mario enemy roster. First introduced to the video game franchise in New Super Mario Bros. U, this persimmon-shaped cousin of the standard Goomba is immediately recognizable by its bright orange hue, rounded lower cheeks, and angry fanged expression printed on the front 2x2 tile.
Unlike traditional minifigures, this character is fully brick-built using 14 pieces, including specialized reddish brown feet, 1x2 curved slopes, and an interactive action tag tile on top. Collectors of the LEGO Super Mario line appreciate Goombrat as an essential enemy for army-building and level expansion, adding visual variety beyond the standard brown Goombas.
Condition is critical for the interactive elements; both the printed angry face tile and the barcode action tile need to remain free of heavy scuffs and scratches to maintain aesthetic display quality and ensure proper scanning with interactive LEGO Mario, Luigi, or Peach figures.
Goombrat made its debut in 2022 across select Super Mario releases, notably featured in the blind-bagged Character Packs – Series 4 (71402) as well as the Goomba's Shoe Expansion Set (71404). Because Series 4 utilized blind-bag packaging, acquiring a specific character required feel-testing or aftermarket purchasing.
With the retirement of Series 4 and corresponding 2022 expansion sets, Goombrat is no longer in active production. While not exceptionally rare due to widespread retail distribution during its release, individual complete figures have become steadily less common on the secondary market as Mario builders snap them up for custom modular courses.
Brick-built LEGO Super Mario characters typically experience moderate appreciation compared to licensed minifigures from themes like Star Wars or Marvel. However, enemy characters with army-building appeal, like Goombrat, tend to maintain stable collector interest above their original retail pack cost.
As early waves of the LEGO Super Mario theme retire and new builders enter the ecosystem, complete character collections from early blind-bag series will retain solid demand. Expect modest, stable value retention rather than dramatic exponential spikes.
