LEGO has made two big Disney Castles, the 2016 original (71040) and the 2023 remake (43222), and our catalog lists both as retired. Here is how they differ in size, colour and minifigures, which one to look for on the secondary market, and which current Disney sets fill the same spot on a shelf.
LEGO has made two large Disney Castles, and you cannot buy either one new any more: our catalog lists both the 2016 original (71040) and the 2023 remake (43222) as retired. If you want one, the choice is about which castle to look for on the secondary market. The 2023 version is the bigger build with the gold and pink colours of today's Walt Disney World castle and a princess cast; the 2016 version keeps the classic blue look and Mickey and friends.

Disney Castle (43222): the bigger, newer build
The 2023 Disney Castle, made for Disney's 100th anniversary in the gold and pink colours of today's Walt Disney World castle, with eight princess and prince minifigures.
The 2023 remake is larger in every direction and adds a tower on one side, which is where most of the extra width comes from. Its colours follow the real Cinderella Castle, which took on gold and pink accents for Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary in 2021, so it is the version that matches a recent trip to the park. Its minifigures are Disney princesses with their princes, and they include the first LEGO minifigures of Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel. Like the original, the back is open, with rooms full of references to Disney films.
Disney Castle (71040): the classic blue original
The 2016 Disney Castle in the classic blue, tan and white of the pre-2021 Cinderella Castle, with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and Tinker Bell.
The original recreates the Walt Disney World castle as it looked before the 2021 makeover, and each of its accessible rooms carries features inspired by Disney animated films. It is a little smaller, which makes it easier to fit on an ordinary shelf, and its five figures are the Mickey and friends cast rather than princesses. If your memory of the castle is the blue one, this is the set that matches it.
Which one to look for
- Buy 43222 if you want the bigger build, the current park look and the princesses.
- Buy 71040 if you prefer the classic blue castle, want Mickey and friends, or have less width to spare.
- On the secondary market, check that a used copy includes its minifigures and instructions, and buy from a seller with a clear returns policy; both sets are large enough that missing pieces are hard to spot from photos.
