BrickHeadz are brick-built display figures with a big cube head, sold on their own. Minifigures are the small figures that come in most LEGO sets and in blind-packed series. Here is how they differ, how many of each exist in our catalog, and which to collect.
Collect BrickHeadz if you want a favourite character as a build you notice on a desk or shelf. Collect minifigures if you want variety, figures that live inside your sets, and the deepest collecting hobby LEGO has. The two are not really rivals: one is a small display model, the other is the figure that comes with almost everything LEGO makes.

BrickHeadz: a build you display
A BrickHeadz figure is a small model in its own right: a cube head, a short body and a baseplate, built from a bag of ordinary bricks rather than snapped together from a few parts. Recent sets often hold a group of characters from one film or show, which makes a set a complete little display rather than a single figure.
Our catalog lists 196 BrickHeadz sets. The line peaked in 2018 with 43 sets and has added 15 to 18 a year since 2021. Of the sets on sale now with a US price, the median costs $24.99 and has about 290 pieces, ranging from single figures to five-character packs.

Minifigures: the figure inside everything
The minifigure first appeared in 1978 and is built into how LEGO sets work: vehicles have seats for it, buildings have doors its size, and most play sets include at least one. Our catalog lists more than 17,000 different minifigures. You collect them by buying the sets they come in, by buying Collectible Minifigures series, which LEGO sells one figure at a time in sealed packs so you do not know which you will get, and on the secondary market for a specific figure.
That breadth is the case for minifigures: characters from nearly every LEGO theme exist as one, and swapping heads, hair and accessories lets you make your own. The case against is size. One minifigure on a desk is easy to miss, so collections usually live in frames, display cases or the sets themselves.
What about value?
Neither is a reliable investment. Only ten BrickHeadz sets that retired from 2022 to 2025 have a value in our market data; nine of them sit above their US list price, but ten sets is too few to treat as a rule, and on sets that cost $10 to $20 any gain is measured in dollars. For minifigures, the rare and exclusive figures are where the value is, and most common figures are worth little on their own. - A display of one film or show: one of the multi-character BrickHeadz sets.
- Figures to play with or build scenes around: minifigures, through the sets you already want.
- Collecting widely across themes: minifigures and the Collectible Minifigures series.
- Both: BrickHeadz for the shelf you look at, minifigures for everything else.
