As the title says I did some research and found out that apparently LEGO will directly replace these defective pieces with (supposedly) no questions asked, but the site to do it makes you enter them one by one which I assume is an intentional annoyance to limit it to authentic one-off requests rather than encourage people to scam them out of lots of pieces.
