Galloping Reindeer Update
The galloping reindeer modification for set 40499 Santa's Sleigh has received some updates, including changes to the drive system and adjustments to address potential performance issues. This modification creates a base for the set, making the reindeer appear to gallop and adding a rocking movement to the sleigh.
The most significant update is the inclusion of a manual hand crank option for the drive system, in addition to the Circuit Cubes Geared Motor Cube. If you prefer to use a LEGO Powered Up or Power Functions motor, you can still use the previous version of the instructions. The update also addresses friction issues caused by variations in part 2853 Technic Engine Crankshaft. The updated design reconfigures the galloping mechanism to eliminate problems with the longer axle version of this part.
The parts list and instructions are designed for the four-reindeer version, assuming you already own set 40499. The design is modular, so you can extend it by building more reindeer base sections. The instructions also note changes to the reins, which cannot be rigidly clipped to the reindeer due to the movement. The reindeer connect to the crankshaft with a single stud below their front hoof, which can be a bit tricky to attach. If you choose to use Circuit Cubes, you'll need a Geared Motor Cube and a Regular Battery Cube.
You can find the updated building instructions and parts list on the Rebrickable page, and a full build kit is available from BuildaMOC. If you're looking to enhance your set 40499, consider getting a LEGO storage box to keep all your pieces organized.

You can see a demonstration of the model […]
